TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a closure for a container. With the closure according to the invention, a torsionally rigid closure is obtained with an externally visible flat surface for application to a container.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Thin-walled plastic closures for containers risk easily losing their shape and can cause problems in the production line when the container has been filled with contents and the closure shell is applied to the container. The shape must also be maintained when the container is repeatedly opened and closed. A common solution for increasing the torsional rigidity of thin-walled lids is to design a sunken surface in the middle part of the lid.
In some contexts, however, it may be desirable for the outer visible surface of the closure to be completely flat and smooth, for example for aesthetic reasons or when applying text. The problem with this type of lid is that they easily lose their fit when packing and closing the container. One solution to increase the torsional rigidity of lids without a sunken center surface is to provide the inside with sloping ribs extending radially from the lid rim of the lid to the center of the lid. The disadvantage of these ribs is that the contents of the container, whether it consists of particles or a liquid material, often stick to the ribs and crack away when the closure is opened.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to a closure made of plastic for closing a container, the closure comprising an inner lid and an outer lid. The inner lid of the closure comprises a central recessed surface which is delimited around its periphery by an outwardly sloping side wall. The outer lid of the closure comprises a top wall with a flat upper surface delimited by a circumferential lid rim which when applied to the container is adapted to abut the outside of the container. The inner and outer lids are irreversibly connected before the closure is applied to the container. 2 The closure described herein is intended to be applied to and close a mouthpiece on a single container. The container may be made of plastic material, glass, cardboard or metal and the opening of the container may have a round, oval, square or rectangular shape.
The inner and outer lids are advantageously manufactured separately, for example by injection molding plastic, for example polypropylene or other thermoplastics. This method is well known to those skilled in the art.
The inner cover comprises a substantially flat submerged central surface which is defined around its outer periphery by a side wall which slopes obliquely outwards and away from the submerged central surface. The connection between the recessed flat surface and the side wall is advantageously rounded to give the inner lid an increased torsional rigidity. The peripheral side wall of the inner lid is provided with an outwardly directed flange which is parallel to the plane-lowered central surface and adapted to abut against an upper edge of the mouth of the container.
The outer lid of the closure comprises a top wall which has a flat and smooth surface on its outside which terminates in a downwardly directed lid rim formed as a unit with the flat upper surface. The inside of the lid rim is adapted to enclose and lie close to the outside of the container mouth. The inside of the lid frame also comprises a first locking element adapted to engage a second locking element arranged on the outside of the mouth of the container. The first and second locking elements are intended to retain the closure of the container after the closure has been applied thereto. The inside of the outer lid has a groove arranged in the connection between the top wall and the lid rim. The groove is delimited by a first and a second low ridge and is adapted to occupy the outwardly directed flange and an upper part of the outwardly sloping side wall from the inner cover and retain these in the groove.
Before applying the closure to the mouth of the container, the inner and outer lids are irreversibly connected together to form a uniform closure. This means that the two caps the interconnection are permanently interconnected and cannot be disassembled without being deformed. The closure with the irreversibly interconnected lids can be applied and removed from the mouth of the container an unlimited number of times.
The irreversible connection between the inner and outer lids occurs by immediately after the manufacture, ie. the injection molding of the respective lid, when the plastic from which the lid 3 is made has not yet cooled, the inner lid is placed in the outer lid so that the outward flange and an upper part of the outwardly sloping side wall from the inner lid are received in the groove arranged in the connection between the top wall and the lid rim on that outer lid. The size of the inner lid is precisely adapted so that said outwardly directed flange and upper part of the outwardly sloping side wall is pressed down into the groove of the outer lid spring this between said first and second ridges which results in the inner lid being clamped in the groove on the inside of the outer the lid. When the plastic has cooled and reached its final rigidity, the inner cover remains permanently connected to the outer cover and cannot be removed without the two covers being deformed.
The first and second locking elements preferably consist of snap elements arranged on the inside of the lid rim and the outside of the mouth, respectively. The lower inside of the lid jar is advantageously provided with a first circumferential and inwardly directed softly rounded flange. The inward flange of the lid jar is intended to engage a corresponding second circumferential outwardly slightly rounded flange arranged on the outside of the mouth of the container when the closure is applied to the mouth.
The closure is applied to the mouth of the container by placing the closure over the mouth so that the lid rim on the outer lid surrounds the outside of the mouth. The container mouth advantageously has a diameter which is adapted so that when closed it abuts the inside of the counter-lid rim and the inward flange of the lid rim. When a downward pressure is applied to the flat surface of the top wall, the upper edge of the mouth is pressed against the lid rim and the lower part of the inward flange so that the lid rim is resiliently pressed perpendicularly outwards. This means that the inwardly directed flange of the lid rim slides over the outwardly directed flange of the mouth, engages and abuts against this and thus retains the closure of the container.
When the closure is to be removed from the container, the user grips the closure between two fingers, for example between the thumb and forefinger, and pulls the closure straight up. Due to the slightly rounded design of the flanges in the snap device, the closure slides off by means of an upward pulling force. Advantageously, the lower part of the lid frame is provided with one or more recesses which the user can grasp to remove the closure.
The benefits of this closure are several. The closure according to the invention combines two different types of lid and its advantages in one: the torsional rigidity which is achieved by means of the recessed surface in the inner lid and the smooth flat outside which is achieved with the smooth lid. Due to the recessed surface of the inner lid, a torsional rigidity of the pre-closure normally associated with recessed lids is achieved, but since the inner lid is fixedly connected to the outer lid, this torsional rigidity can be achieved with a lid which is considerably thinner than required if the closure consisted of only one inner lid.
A further advantage of the closure according to the invention is that it has a completely flat and smooth unbroken outside on which a text can be applied over the entire surface, even down the overlock rim if desired. Since the outer cover is connected to the inner cover with a recessed surface, a complete torsional rigidity is achieved. The lower surface of the inner lid, i.e. the surface facing the inside of the container, is completely smooth and thus the problem of contents from the container getting stuck in the ribs on the inside of the lid is avoided.
Although two lids, ie. an inner and an outer lid are connected together to form a single closure, the total amount of plastic in the end product does not increase significantly because the two lids can be made of thinner plastic when used together than would have been needed if they had been used separately. In addition, no slanted ribs are needed on the inside of the outer lid, which saves on the amount of material.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 shows an exploded view of the closure with the two included lids and the mouth of the container. Figure 2 shows the closure when the two lids are irreversibly connected and applied to the mouth of the container.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Figure 1 shows the closure 1 with the included inner lid 2, the outer lid 3 and the container 4. The inner lid consists of a central sunken surface 5 surrounded by an obliquely outwardly sloping side wall 6. The connection between the sunken flat surface 5 and the side wall 6 is advantageously rounded 7. This gives the inner lid an increased torsional rigidity. The peripheral side wall 6 of the inner lid 2 is provided with an outwardly directed flange 8 which is parallel to the plane-lowered central surface 5 and adapted to abut against an upper edge 9 of the mouth of the container 14. The outer lid 3 comprises a top wall 10 which on its outside 11 has a flat and smooth surface which terminates in a downwardly directed lid rim 12 formed as a unit with the flat upper surface. The inside of the lid frame 13 is adapted to enclose and lie close to the outside mouth of the container 14. The inside of the lid frame also comprises a first locking element 15 adapted to engage a second locking element 16 arranged on the outside of the mouth 14 of the container. The first and second locking elements 15, 16 are intended to retain the closure of the container after the closure has been applied thereto. On the inside of the outer cover 2 a groove 17 is arranged in the connection between the top wall 10 and the lid rim 12. The groove is delimited by a first and a second low ridge 18, 19 and is adapted to receive the outwardly directed flange 8 and an upper part 20 of the outwardly sloping side wall 6 from the inner cover 1 and retain them in the groove 17.
Figure 2 shows the closure in which the inner and outer lids 2, 3 are irreversibly connected to a uniform closure 1 when applied to the container 4. This means that the two lids after the connection are permanently connected and can not be disassembled without being deformed. The closure 1 with the irreversible interconnected lids can be applied and removed from the mouth 14 of the container an unlimited number of times.
The inner lid 2 is placed in the outer lid 3 so that the outwardly directed flange 8 and the upper part 20 of the outwardly sloping side wall 6 from the inner lid 2 are received in the groove 17 arranged in the connection between the top wall 10 and the lid rim 12 on the outer lid 3. picture in figure 2). The size of the inner cover 2 is precisely adapted so that when said outwardly directed flange 8 and upper part 20 of the outwardly sloping side wall 6 are pressed down into the groove 17 on the outer cover 3, these spring between said first and second ridges 18, 19 down the ice groove 17, resulting in that the inner cover 2 is clamped in the groove 17 on the inside of the outer cover 3. The inner cover 2 is permanently connected to the outer cover 3 and cannot be removed without the closure being deformed.
The first and second locking elements 15, 16 are preferably constituted by snap-fit elements arranged on the inside of the lid rim 12 and the outside of the mouth 14, respectively. The lower inside of the lid rim 12 is advantageously provided with a first circumferential and inwardly directed softly rounded flange 15. The inlet flange 15 is intended to engage corresponding to the second circumferential outwardly slightly rounded flange 16 arranged on the outside of the mouth of the container 14 when the closure is applied to the mouth 14. Figure 2 shows the closure 1 applied to the mouth of the container 14. The closure 1 is placed over the mouth 14 so that the lid rim 12 on the outer lid 3 the outside of the surround mouth and connects tightly to it. The inward flange 15 of the lid rim has slid the outward flange 16 of the orifice and abuts against it. Thus, the retaining closure 1 on the container 4. The lower part of the lid frame 12 can advantageously be provided with one or more recesses which the user can grip to facilitate the removal of the closure 1 from the container 4 (not shown).
